Penghu South Sea Waiting Room

Public Seating Made from Marine Waste Materials

Penghu’s Third Fishing Port is a crucial maritime transportation hub, and the “Penghu South Sea Waiting Room” located here is a vital part of island sea transport, handling passenger transfers to Qimei and Wang’an. However, since its construction in 2009, the waiting room’s exterior and hardware facilities have seen little change, leading to various usage issues. To address this, the Maritime and Port Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications collaborated with the Taiwan Design Research Institute (TDRI), inviting design teams to incorporate design and aesthetics for renovation.

NAKNAK is responsible for the design and planning of public seating in the South Sea Waiting Room. In line with the harbor’s character, the seats are made from recycled marine waste materials. These materials come from over 70,000 PET bottles collected from Taiwan’s waters, mixed with recycled oyster shell powder and styrofoam. The seating design allows for horizontal or back-to-back connections according to spatial needs, with ergonomic consideration for scale, curvature, and structure. The space underneath can easily accommodate large luggage, combining both aesthetics and practicality.
