《 磊 Layer 》Stone Materials Exhibition.
Hualien has been developing its stone industry since the 1960s, evolving from exporting ashtrays and furniture to mass-producing building materials in response to the rise of the domestic construction industry. Hualien remains a key hub for Taiwan’s stone industry. Over the past sixty years, a group of local professionals has accumulated diverse processing techniques, allowing stone to be used in various forms throughout daily life. Today, stone can be made translucent, flat panels can be shaped into curves, and seemingly fragile marble can exhibit torsional strength.
This exhibition, titled “Layer,” focuses on “Seeing Hualien’s Stone Processing Craftsmanship.” It showcases stone products made in local factories to present the industry’s past glory, the energy of inherited techniques, and the aspirations and achievements of innovation. The layered nature of the stone industry will renew your understanding and imagination.
The exhibition name “Layer” is derived from the character for “stone” (磊), symbolizing the stacking of many stones. It highlights how the development of Hualien’s stone industry is the result of generations of accumulation and layered progress. By following the development trajectory of the local stone industry and incorporating external professional resources, this two-story exhibition space will guide you in rediscovering the past, present, and future of Hualien’s stone industry.
